“Why Not”

wayne-pa-probate-wills-lawyers-last-words-timothy-leary-why-not

Why not? … Yeah … Beautiful

“Why Not” – Timothy Leary – Bio

Timothy Leary
Influential American Psychologist
Born October 22, 1920 – Died May 31, 1996

“Why Not” – Timothy Leary – Note

In early 1995, Leary discovered he was terminally ill with inoperable prostate cancer.

He did not reveal the condition to the press upon diagnosis, but did so after the death of Jerry Garcia in August.

Leary’s death was videotaped for posterity at his request, capturing his final words.

During his final moments, he said, “Why not?” to his son Zachary.

He uttered the phrase repeatedly, in different intonations, and died soon after.

His last word, according to Zachary Leary, was “beautiful.”

“Why Not” – Timothy Leary – Popular Culture

“The Psychedelic Experience” (Timothy Leary’s book) was the inspiration for John Lennon’s song “Tomorrow Never Knows” on The Beatles’ album “Revolver.”

Leary once recruited John Lennon to write a theme song for his California gubernatorial campaign (which was interrupted by his prison sentence), inspiring Lennon to come up with “Come Together”, based on Leary’s theme and catchphrase for the campaign.

Leary was also present when Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono recorded Give Peace a Chance during one of their bed-ins in Montreal and is mentioned in the lyrics of the song.

The Moody Blues also recorded a track about Leary, Legend of a Mind, on their 1968 album In Search of the Lost Chord in which the refrain is “Timothy Leary’s dead. No, no, no, no, He’s outside looking in”.

“Suicide Is (Not) Painless”

“Suicide Is (Not) Painless” – Bio

“Suicide Is Painless
Written by Johnny Mandel (music) and Mike Altman (lyrics),
Theme song for both the movie and TV series M*A*S*H

“Suicide Is (Not) Painless” – Note

Mike Altman is the son of the original film’s director, Robert Altman, and was 14 years old when he wrote the song’s lyrics.

wayne-pa-probate-lawyers-suicide-is-painless-2

Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for Mandel: first, it had to be called “Suicide Is Painless”; second, it had to be the “stupidest song ever written”.

Altman tried to write the lyrics himself, but found that it was too difficult for his 45-year-old brain to write “stupid enough”.

Instead he gave the task to his 14-year-old-son, Michael, who wrote the lyrics in five minutes.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1980s, Robert Altman said that while he only made $70,000 for having directed the movie, his son (Mike) had earned more than $1 million for having co-written the song.

“Wear Sunscreen”

wayne-pa-probate-lawyers-lucid-intervals-wear-sunscreen-1

“Wear Sunscreen” – Bio

Mark Anthony “Baz” Luhrmann
Born September 17, 1962
Australian film director, screenwriter and producer

“Wear Sunscreen” – Intro

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience

I will dispense this advice now

wayne-pa-probate-lawyers-lucid-intervals-wear-sunscreen-2

“Wear Sunscreen” – Background

“Wear Sunscreen” or “Sunscreen” are the common names of an article titled “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young” written by Mary Schmich and published in the Chicago Tribune as a column in 1997, but often erroneously attributed to a commencement speech by author Kurt Vonnegut.

Both its subject and tone are similar to the 1927 poem “Desiderata”.

The most popular and well-known form of the essay is the successful music single “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)”, released in 1999, by Baz Luhrmann.

“Outta’ my way!”

“Outta’ my way, you bastards!”

“Outta’ my way, you bastards!” – Bio

Johnny Depp
Born June 9, 1963
David Letterman Show Interview

“Outta’ my way, you bastards!” – Letterman

the first time I met him

I happen to be in Aspen

this is December, 1994

I happen to be in Aspen

I got an invitation from mutual friend

who said would you like to meet Hunter?

come to the Woody Creek Tavern

at midnight or something

so I go to the Woody Creek tavern

and I make my way

as far back in the place

you know

to the back wall just to kind of

be invisible

and then around 1:30

the front door bursts open

and I literally saw sparks

sparks

and then I saw people

throwing themselves out of the way yeah

on this kind of sea

you know opening that parting the sea

and the people jumping and diving

hurling themselves it to safety and then I heard

out of my way you bastards

and has he got closer

I realize that he had

a three foot cattle prod

in his left hand

and a taser

in his right hand hand
